Depression, while widely talked about in recent times, is vastly different from one person to the next. Some individuals may suffer from depression seasonally, which is usually triggered by changing climatic conditions. On the other hand, some people may have situational depression, which comes about when they are experiencing specific scenarios. Others may have clinical depression, which is challenging to live with but can be camouflaged by simply going about their day-to-day. With all this in mind, it can be difficult to discern if what you are feeling is just a touch of the blues or if you need medication to balance out your brain chemicals to mitigate the depression. Irrespective of the cause, here are two behavioural changes that should have you seek counselling for potential depression.
Your daily life is seemingly progressively overwhelming
One of the common symptoms that you may experience if you are suffering from undiagnosed depression is finding it progressively harder to get through your day. When you have a mood disorder, the smallest of inconveniences could cause you a substantial degree of stress. For instance, getting into conflict with a coworker or a friend could make you feel on edge the entire day. As a result, you may start to feel severe sadness if you have to leave your house again and run into the same individual.
If you are proactively avoiding social situations or shirking responsibilities due to feelings of angst and anxiety, then you should set up an appointment with a counsellor as soon as possible. Going into counselling will provide you with tools to manage these feelings, whether in the form of behavioural changes or prescription medication.
You believe that you are the problem
Life is not all laughs and giggles. Every single person is bound to go through hard times at one point or another, and whether the negative situations were due to your own doing or were beyond your control, the best way to get through them is to look for a way forward rather than stay wallowing in your current situation. However, individuals that are suffering from depression due to one cause or another could develop a tendency to beat themselves up when considering any negative situation that they encounter.
For example, say a partner goes silent for a prolonged period. Instead of wondering what could have caused their silence and perhaps reaching out to find out, you could end up blaming yourself for the breakup, even if you had no hand in it. As a result, you might end up over-analyzing your interactions and obsessing over the person in an unhealthy manner. But this is just one example. If you find that you are always blaming yourself for upheavals in your career, family life and so on, you may want to seek counselling to establish the root of these unhealthy insecurities.Share
